When an individual wants to be a part of the world of mental health nursing, they can do so by training to become a licensed practical nurse. They can accomplish this by training for a year or two about various aspects of nursing, such as anatomy, patient care, pharmacology and physiology. Prior to undergoing practical nursing training, they have to be at least a high school graduate to qualify. After graduating from nursing college students must then pass the national board exams, before they can obtain a license to practice.

Mental health nursing is an area of nursing that calls for a good deal of patience and understanding. The people who practice it, or wish to practice it should also possess superior interpersonal skills along with the ability to establish bonds with their patients, to further assist them with their mental health problems. If a person does not have any of these unique personality traits that must be part of a psychiatric nurse's character, it would be pretty hard for them to adjust to the demands that mental health nursing will produce.
